Will the HTC Tablet have Chrome OS or Android?

With the HTC Tablet coming soon, it is still unclear whether or not it will run Android or Chrome OS.

Likely, it will run Android, an operating system people have become familiar with and is in use on over 60 devices, instead of Chrome OS, an operating system designed for netbooks and more traditional PC’s instead of phone-like devices.

Not everyone agrees that Android is the best option for tablets.

There are many great articles discussing the benefits of Android vs. Chrome OS. The choice made for the HTC tablet will be an indicator of what operating system Google will promote for tablet computing in the future.

As you can see, there’s little consensus about whether Android should replace Chrome OS on tablet PCs, or whether Chrome OS will work for tablets at all.

The HTC Tablet is Under Development

After denying that HTC was going to release a tablet until there was at least one compelling feature, there is lots of evidence that a tablet will be released.

The question is when. According to South African HTC representative Quinton Leigh, a tablet can be expected mid-2011.

I say there will be a tablet before Christmas 2010.

Here are some articles to read up on the HTC Android tablet debate:

HTC Tablet Specs – A Likely Hardware Configuration

Rumors abound regarding the HTC Android Tablet PC.

One of the major sources of information regarding the upcoming tablet is an article from PhoneReport.info.

Quinton Leigh revealed to PhoneReport that the manufacturer is preparing a Google Android-based tablet, 1080p video recording and 5.1 surround sound for its upcoming mobile phones.

According to this article, the HTC Tablet will have 1080p video recording. If that’s true, it will likely have 1080p video out, since their HTC Evo 4G phone has 720p HDMI output already.

Likely specs for the Android-based HTC tablet

Taking information from the PhoneReport article and combining it with technology used in HTC’s latest phones, here is a list of specs that I believe will be featured in the tablet, when released:

  • Display
    • Touch screen (obviously)
    • 10″ or 11″ OLED screen (featured on the HTC Desire) - This is based on the presumtion that HTC will want to make the screen larger than that on the iPad.
  • Video
    • 1080p video recording
    • 1080p video output
  • Audio
    • 5.1 surround sound output (by Yamaha)
  • Hardware
    • WiFi – 802.11n
    • At least a 1GHz Snapdragon processor (already featured in HTC phones)
    • At least 576MB of RAM (already featured in HTC phones)
    • Bluetooth
    • Audio jack
    • microSD memory card

Will the tablet be a home theater component?

HTC has repeatedly stated that they will not simply release another tablet – they want to make theirs unique. These specs – especially the 1080p input/output and the surround sound capabilities suggest that HTC will try to make the tablet more of a central home theater solution.

Having the tablet be part of the entertainment solution would also make sense: HTC officers have stated that one of their demographics is women who would be social networking while watching TV.

HTC Says “No” About a HTC Tablet, but they doth protest too much, methinks.

The respected site Pocket-Lint.com has the following to say on the HTC Tablet:

HTC is not interested in releasing a tablet to rival Apple’s iPad. At least, not yet.

Eric Lin, the company’s global PR and online community manager, told Pocket-lint: “We are always looking at it, but, right now, the whole idea is that in order to be successful with a tablet, you need to have something compelling. And not just a compelling form factor”.

They draw the conclusion that ”that means HTC is happy to sit back and see what the rest of the market does first” because Eric Lin said : “And we are not going to do anything until we have found [one compelling feature].” False.

There will be an HTC Tablet. Soon.

Eric Lin is pulling a Steve Jobs, denying a product until it’s released.

If you want to succeed, it’s important to learn from the best. Steve Jobs is the best salesperson in the tech world, and Steve Jobs has shown time and time again that the best way to get people talking about a product is by denying its existence.

By saying the tablet market is not compelling screams that HTC is going to be releasing a product. And guess what – that product will be compelling! Simply by releasing a tablet after saying that they won’t release a non-compelling tablet, HTC will have released a compelling tablet. It’s logic. Fallacious, yes, but logic nonetheless.

“…if we have a compelling feature, a really compelling use…it’ll help us to stand out.”

Here’s my prediction: HTC will happen to find a “compelling feature” a couple of months before Christmas. And we will be able to enjoy a brand-new HTC tablet under our tree.
